Fire Drill Apathy - Time for Tea

May 30, 2010
Category: General

Government guidelines suggest a full fire drill once a year. However, an opinion survey of 2,044 UK adults by insurer RSA shows a shocking level of apathy:

  • 25% of employees have never participated in a full fire evacuation;
  • 10% will sit at their desks for over a minute after hearing the alarm;
  • 36 seconds is the average time that a worker waited before reacting to the fire alarm;
  • 5% admitted their workplace had no marked fire exits;
  • 6% said they would stop to pick up a drink when the alarm sounds before heading out;
  • nearly 50% said they will collect belongings or documents before leaving the building.
